Spay and Neuter Costs: What Affects the Price
By Dr. Kirk Wright, DVM · Updated
Spay and neuter prices can vary a lot from one place to another. That makes people wonder what the difference is. Often, it is what is included and who is doing the work.
What affects the price
- Species, size, and age of your pet.
- Whether it is a spay or a neuter. A spay is abdominal surgery and often costs more.
- Pre-anesthetic exam and blood work.
- Anesthesia, monitoring, and the surgical team.
- Pain medication, during and after.
- Whether the pet has health issues or is in heat or pregnant, which can make surgery more involved.
- Extras like a microchip, an e-collar, or vaccines.
The timing of surgery is a decision to make with your vet, based on your pet.
Comparing estimates
Two prices may not mean the same thing. Ask what is included: pre-surgical exam, blood work, IV fluids, monitoring, pain medication, take-home medication, a recheck, an e-collar. A lower total that leaves things out may cost more once you add them back.
Low-cost options
Many communities have nonprofit and low-cost spay and neuter programs. They can be a good choice for a healthy pet. Ask what is included, what the surgical and anesthesia protocols are, how pain is managed, and what to do if there is a problem afterward. Your regular vet can tell you whether a low-cost program suits your pet.
Frequently asked questions
Why does a female pet usually cost more to spay than a male to neuter?
A spay involves surgery inside the abdomen, which usually takes more time and care than a neuter.
Is a low-cost clinic safe?
Many are. Ask about their anesthesia, monitoring, and pain control, just as you would at any clinic.
